FAQs
Small, recent perforations can close with medicines and dry-ear care. Tympanoplasty is advised when the hole is longstanding, keeps getting infected, or hearing loss persists.
It’s done under general anaesthesia, so you’re comfortable. The operation usually takes 60–90 minutes; most patients go home the same day or after one night.
Hearing may feel blocked for 1–2 weeks due to packing and swelling. It improves gradually over 3–6 weeks, and your ENT will repeat a hearing test after healing.
Keep the ear dry, don’t blow your nose for a week, sneeze with your mouth open, and avoid heavy lifting or straining. No swimming until your surgeon confirms the graft has healed.
Use a cotton ball with petroleum jelly or doctor-advised earplugs to keep water out, and tilt the head away from the operated ear. Remove the plug after showering and gently pat dry.
Avoid flying for about 2–4 weeks (or until cleared). Use over-ear headphones initially and start light walking early; gym or strenuous exercise should wait 2–3 weeks or as advised.
Infection, dizziness, taste change, or graft failure are uncommon. Seek care for fever, increasing pain, foul-smelling discharge, sudden hearing drop, or persistent spinning sensation.
